Learning Coordinator [CLOSED]

(One year fixed term contract with possibility of extension subject to funding)[17th July 2014]


GNDR is formed of over 600 member civil society organisations concerned with Disaster Risk Reduction. Learning is an important aspect of the network, reflected in programmes such as ‘Views from the Frontline’ and ‘Action at the Frontline’. As the network places an increased emphasis on regional development and support the need for learning, knowledge sharing and capacity building is increasing. The purpose of the role is to provide support to GNDR members and Secretariat staff at national, regional and global levels in all activities relating to learning and knowledge. including vertically connecting local learning, knowledge and wisdom with the policy discourse at national, regional and global levels The post holder will form part of a small team of UK and regionally-based GNDR Secretariat staff, advisors and consultants.


Reports to:GNDR Operations Director


Team Relationships: Working in close collaborative with GNDR’s Operations team including Operations Director, Programme Manager, Communications Coordinator and five Regional Development Coordinators.



The remit of this post will cover the following core responsibilities:

1.    Coordination of Action at the Frontline

The Action at the Frontline programme is currently being conducted with 53 participant organisations and duties will include overall coordination and monitoring, running regular sharing and learning events (online using skype, facebook etc), coordinating regional meetings, drawing together learning and case studies, and ensuring that the programme keeps on track.

2.    Website ‘solutions zone’

Despite the network’s stated goal of supporting learning and knowledge sharing this doesn’t happen naturally with people who are practitioners and activists, so the ‘solutions zone’ is a new approach to presenting learning and knowledge resources in a way which is attractive to practitioners. It forms a component of the redevelopment of the website and the Learning Coordinator will work closely with the Communications Coordinator, web developers, Operations Director and other team members to develop the zone in a way which ensures good take-up from the membership.

3.    Frontline

The successful ‘Views from the Frontline’ programme is now being developed into a strategic new programme of action research linked closely to ‘Action at the Frontline’ and supporting action at local and national levels and advocacy and engagement at global level. The learning coordinator will work as part of the Frontline team with a particular focus on analysis, reporting and learning based on the programme. The learning coordinator will collaborate with the Programmes manager concerning project management of the Frontline programme as well as training and support for participants (including regional workshops).

4.    Strengthening links with academic and knowledge institutions

The work done by GNDR and its membership provides unique evidence and insights into local level disaster risk reduction, resilience and development. We aim to strengthen links with relevant academic and knowledge institutions for the benefit of our members and the communities they serve, tapping in to expertise and relevant thinking, and also gaining recognition for GNDR and its work.

5.    Assessing take-up and impact of learning

Knowledge and learning have an important role supporting practitioners in their work as well as providing information to other stakeholders and the post holder will plan and execute activities to assess the take-up and impact of learning and to provide recommendations for improvements


Attending and interact with relevant conferences, academics and practitioner organisations.

Position GNDR as a “leading” resilience / development network dealing with issues of disaster risk reduction, resilience and sustainable development


  • Educated to Masters or equivalent level
  • Legally permitted to work in the UK

The postholder will be expected to show experience and expertise in the following areas:

  • Understanding theories and methodologies relating to learning with a particular emphasis on experiential learning and participative learning
  • Familiar with relevant themes and debates in the DRR, resilience and development domains
  • Comfortable working with a range of learning platforms – websites, e-learning, social media platforms and face to face workshops.
  • Familiar with working with civil society networks and coalitions
  • Ability to think strategically, plan, prioritise and implement multiple work tasks under tight timelines
  • Strong communications skills with fluent written and spoken English, preferably with multiple language skills (ideally Spanish  and/or French)
  • Available to work from September 2014 onwards (1 year fixed term contract with possible extension subject to funding)


Position is based at the GNDR Secretariat office in Teddington, Southwest London. The post is full time with a salary range from £25,000 - £30,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
