Strategy development

How our network came together to create a member-led strategy

Here’s how we got from initial consultation to final, member-led strategy document.

Prioritisation survey

Almost 400 members took part in the June 2025 survey, which covered both an evaluation of GNDR’s 2020–2025 Strategy and ideas for the new one. Together with desk research, relevant GNDR materials, input from National Focal Points at regional workshops, and interviews with key stakeholders, the survey findings fed into the priority-setting process and helped guide the Board’s strategic direction.

Membership engagement process

The regional engagement process gave members further chances to shape the prioritisation work, while also reinforcing the role of the existing Regional Advisory Groups. It included the following steps:

  • An online, asynchronous pre-workshop activity, open to all members, where they could flag their priorities from those raised in the survey
  • Six regional workshops, with over 300 members taking part, to validate and build on what came out of the prioritisation survey
  • Sense-making workshops with the Strategy Working Group, and separately with the SLT and Secretariat, to pull together insights from the regional input and shape options for the Board to consider
  • A global webinar to update members on progress, show how their input had shaped the strategy, walk through the thinking behind it, and give them one more chance to feed back
  • Global Board meetings to finalise the strategy

Drafting committee and feedback

A drafting committee made up of Secretariat staff and regional representatives from the GNDR global board put together a first draft, which then went out to the whole membership for review.

That first draft also went to partners and donors, including SDC, for their comments.

All the feedback received was then folded into a final version of the strategy, which the global board approved.

Next steps

Members in each region and country will now come together to plan how they’ll implement the strategy jointly, with support from the Secretariat.
