The first ever World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) will be held on 23-25th May 2016 and is a call to action by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to reduce human loss and suffering from crises. Read more to be informed, support GNDR and participate.

The WHS aims to set an agenda for change to make humanitarian action fit for the great challenges we face now and in the future. A series of regional and thematic consultations have taken place over the last 18 months to gather people’s priorities, and to determine the content of the Summit itself. Read about the various consultations that have taken place globally, and what is still to come.

How has GNDR been involved?

  • GNDR worked with VOICE to contribute to the Europe regional scoping paperpdf on one of the WHS’s themes: Reducing Vulnerability and Managing Risks.
  • Our regional development coordinators attended key regional meetings and sharing the voices from the frontline.
  • GNDR members from around the world took part in the WHS online consultations.
  • GNDR members are attending the Summit and organising side events.
  • At the Summit we will be pushing some key messages. We believe that if humanitarian action is to be effective we must build resilience before disasters hit, build on local capacities during crises, and build back better afterwards. To do that effectively we must take into account the realities on the ground. We will be using some of our hard hitting examples from Frontline and the 365 disasters campaign to raise awareness of the complex local contexts that must be taken into account in humanitarian work.
