On the 13th October 2016, AYCAH Siera Leone and Action Aid International Sierra Leone organised a one day National Women's Convention in Sierra Leone was held in the Capital city Freetown, Sierra Leone . The Convention gathered Women farmers and Youth Activist from all over the country.
The gathering in the capital Freetown also included policy makers from the Sierra Leone House of Parliament in presenting Women's Charter : Improving Women - Led Farming in Sierra Leone. Their demand/ Way Forward was presented to them with the theme: Equal Rights & Support for Women and the message "More Food, Less Poverty".
Women consist of about 51% of the population and among the most marginalized and excluded groups in Sierra Leone . Poverty among women is highest due to low level of incomes, low asset bases and lack opportunities, choices and decision making over resources. Action Aid International Sierra Leone and its partners (AYCAH Sierra Leone ) and others agencies have been implementing programs on agriculture in the last 10 years as one of its core mandate, targeting women in Sierra Leone
This is in line with commemorating the International Rural Women's Day and the World Food Day. The convention which brings women farmers in Sierra Leone to share concerns and proposed a way forward on improving their effective access to resources and participation in productive agriculture.
Also a caravan procession was done from Action Aid International office in Freetown, right to the Leicester Peak Hill Mountain Western Rural District of Freetown among women farmers, activist groups from all part of the country, media practitioners, tribal heads and other key stakeholders.
