YouthNet Global – Bangladesh

The crucial role of youth in the recent flood response in Feni, Bangladesh.

ORGANISATION
YouthNet Global

LOCATION
Dhaka, Bangladesh

In partnership with YouthNet Global, young volunteers took the lead in providing disaster relief to communities devastated by the recent severe flooding in Feni, Bangladesh. Young people distributed food, clean drinking water, and hygiene kits to flood-affected families, many of whom were displaced from their homes. Their dedication and resilience shine through as they navigate challenging conditions to deliver aid to even the most isolated areas.

The youth-led Disaster Risk Reduction project aimed not only at immediate relief but also at building long-term resilience in these vulnerable communities. Through capacity-building workshops, the young volunteers were trained in flood preparedness, emergency response, and community mobilisation. This empowered them to take swift action during the disaster, ensuring that aid reached those most in need, including women, children, and the elderly.

The crucial role of youth in the recent flood response in Feni, Bangladesh.

The impact of this project has been transformative. Hundreds of families in Feni received life-saving assistance, and the youth involved gained invaluable leadership skills. This initiative underscores the vital role of young people in disaster response and climate action, positioning them as frontline defenders of their communities in the face of climate change.

From awareness to action, young people lead the way in pushing for climate and disaster resilience. This story and photograph is a part of our celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2024. Members from across our network have shared their stories of youth-led or focussed resilience work. It demonstrates that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the changemakers today, driving forward local actions that build resilience to disasters and reduce risk.
