GNDR member spotlight: CSC-Asbl

In the heart of South Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Community Support Center (CSC-Asbl) is working tirelessly to improve lives and restore the environment. Founded in 2016, CSC-Asbl is a community-based organisation committed to promoting human rights, social cohesion, and sustainable development in a region deeply affected by conflict, displacement, and environmental degradation.

A proud member of GNDR, CSC-Asbl is part of our growing network of grassroots organisations leading local solutions to global challenges. Their work shows how community-led resilience can take root even in the most fragile settings — and grow into something transformative.

Seed the Future – More Than Just Planting Trees

One of their most inspiring initiatives is Seed the Future – a reforestation and sustainable agriculture programme that goes far beyond simply planting trees. Born out of the urgent need to address climate change, food insecurity, and the increasing risks of floods and landslides, this initiative supports internally displaced communities with practical, long-term solutions.

Through this project, CSC has:

• Planted over 100 fruit trees – including orange and avocado varieties – to provide both nutrition and income while combating deforestation

• Trained 50 women in sustainable agriculture practices, improving food production and supporting economic independence

• Created community gardens in IDP camps, turning previously barren land into fertile ground for healthy, local food

• Focused efforts on areas at high risk of landslides and floods, helping to stabilise soil and reduce environmental hazards
  

The vision doesn’t stop there. CSC hopes to scale the project across eastern DRC, integrating agroforestry systems that strengthen local food networks while improving climate resilience. The goal is to create a sustainable, scalable model that brings together environmental restoration and social development.

Yet, like many community-led initiatives, Seed the Future faces challenges. Limited funding, lack of high-quality seedlings, and the need for specialised training in water conservation and land management are ongoing hurdles.

CSC-Asbl is actively seeking partnerships with technical experts, environmental organisations, and funders who can help take this promising work even further. With the right support, Seed the Future could grow into a powerful model for resilience-building across the region – and beyond.
