GPDRR25: Day two update

Day two at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 was another brilliant and packed day for GNDR and our members. 

Localising Early Warning Systems and Anticipatory Action Global Seminar

In the morning our GNDR member delegation split in half, half attended the GNDR-led Localising Early Warning Systems and Anticipatory Action seminar, which gave space to our local CSO champions to share the recommendations coming out of their recent national workshops exploring how to strengthen people-centred early warning and early action. 

Here we heard directly from our members in Bangladesh, Kenya, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, Ghana and Peru and then had a high level panel putting the recommendations to each pillar lead of the Early Warning for All initiative to share reflections on enabling environmental and political will for people centred early warnings for all will meaningfully turn the last mile into the first mile. 

Equity in Action: Early Warnings for All People

 The other half of our delegation headed to the REAP- GNDR official side event on Equity in Action: early warning for all. Here our members had the opportunity to share key recommendations from the work they are doing on the frontline of risk Equity in Action: Early Warnings for All People

• The session started with a discussion on equity and how equity works in EWS.
• The session was structured around a fictional case study location – Magulu District in Lombazu. Participants in the room are given handouts with the identity of a person who lives in Magulu. The session went through components of the EWS, providing prompts for discussion on what needs to be done to ensure the EWS suits their person’s needs. In small groups, the participants discussed what their person needs from the EWS, and participants submitted their suggested actions via Mentimeter. It was an interactive discussion as the moderator reflected on the entries and called on speakers from the floor to comment. The session discussed seven themes in designing people-centred EWS. They are:
  • Involvement of the local community
  • Risk Knowledge
  • Monitoring and Warning
  • Dissemination and Communication
  • Response Capacity
  • Multi-Hazards

• Our member Gulshan Akhundova (Azerbaijan) intervened during key components of “Risk Knowledge” in designing people-centred EWS. She shared her experiences of multi-hazards in Azerbaijan and the gap in people-centred Early Warning Systems (EWS) on the ground. 
• Our member, Catalina Diaz Escobar (Colombia), intervened during the segment on “Dissemination and Communication”. She highlighted the importance of connecting the last mile to the first mile. She emphasised community engagements, saying that no matter where and who we are, we all should have the information on time to make life-saving decisions.
• Gloria Bulus (Nigeria) intervened during the “Monitoring and Warning” segment. She emphasised the importance of taking a whole-of-society approach. 

The session wrapped up with resources that support the implementation of people-centred approaches to EWS.

• Our policy lead officially submitted our declaration to the GP statement submissions, outlining our eight call to action messages, which goes directly to the co-chairs to support the outcome document of the GP (and so member states commitment focus for the next three years). This will be published on the GP2025 official site shortly.

Sasakawa Award

In the evening we were proud to win the Sasakawa Award 2025 in the organisation category. Our Executive Director, Marcos Concepcion Raba, collected the award and was joined on stage by global board representatives, Mario Flores, Jana Junghardt and Eena Geslaine Barrun. Marcos dedicated the award to all our members saying that their work was a constant source of inspiration for the GNDR team. We were honoured to have been shortlisted alongside our incredible member Jago Nari, Bangladesh.
