GPDRR25: What we’re doing and how you can get involved

The 8th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction takes place from 2-7 June 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Throughout the event we’ll be calling on global decision makers, member states and civil society organisations to work together on eight priority action areas. You can join in by sharing our key messages on social media.

Member briefings

2-6 June – Daily at 08:30-09:00

Each morning before the conference begins we’ll be running an in-person briefing session for GNDR members. We’ll give a recap of our policy calls to action and share sessions that members are participating in.

 

Scaling-up local voices and local actions for disaster risk reduction

2 June – 09:00-10:00

Rebecca Murphy, our Head of Policy will be moderating this working session of the NGO and stakeholders groups, which will provide an open space for civil society members and partners to come together and agree on a joint strategy for achieving higher visibility and more successful results in our advocacy at the GP2025. Empowering Communities: People-centred and User-Tailored Approaches for Early Warnings and Early/Anticipatory Action

2 June – 11:45 – 13:15 

Rebecca Murphy, our Policy Lead will be moderating this first session of the Early Warnings for All Global Multi-Stakeholder Forum. It will feature community leaders, local practitioners and experts from across the early warning and early action value chain. Participants will explore how inclusive governance has been integrated into Early Warning Systems, and how anticipatory approaches can be scaled and sustained through 2027 and beyond. Read more.

 

Data and Financing for Disaster Displacement as Loss and Damage

GNDR member, Catalina Díaz Escobar of Corporación Antioquia Presente, Colombia, will be speaking at this session, which will explore innovative approaches to building resilience and to avert, minimize, and address loss and damage in the context of climate change and disasters. Read more.

 

Effective Governance Models to Support Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems

GNDR member, Chandrika Kularathna, will be speaking at this session, which will identify effective governance models that clarify mandates, foster cross-sectoral coordination and embed Early Warning Systems into broader DRR and climate adaptation plans. Read more.

 

Spotlight Session: Early Warnings for All

Our Policy Lead, Rebecca Murphy, will be moderating this forum that will spotlight what Early Warnings for All looks like in practice and why it is so important that early warning and anticipatory action is locally-led and why it needs to take a whole-of-society approach. Read more.

GNDR’s Regional Leads for Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, Ipsita Sircar, and João Figueiredo, will be representing GNDR at this session.

 

Solutions for scaling and sustaining investments in multi-hazard early warning systems

GNDR member, Gloria Kasang Bulus, of Bridge that Gap Initiative, Nigeria, will be speaking at this session which will consider challenges and solutions to early warning financing, along with best practices. Read more.

Ignite Stage: Heroines of Resilience: Women at the Forefront of Anticipatory Action in Southeast Asia

GNDR’s Regional Lead, Asia, Ipsita Sircar, will take to the Ignite Stage to present on the inspiring work of women in Southeast Asia, who are leading the way in anticipatory actions.

 

Strengthening disaster risk governance for transformative action and outcomes

GNDR Global Seminar: Localising Early Warning Systems and Anticipatory Action Through CSOs

5 June 09:00 – 13:30

As part of our Localising Early Warning Systems and Anticipatory Action Through CSOs project, we are hosting a global seminar that will bring together key stakeholders in early warning systems, including local EWS champions, who will share their lived experiences. The seminar will synthesise the key outputs from national workshops and a global EWS survey that have been held in the run-up to the Global Platform, and together, we will produce the first substantial version of a Strategic Roadmap for Localising Early Warning Systems.

 

From data to action: Strengthening the understanding of disaster impact data and its application in decision-making

GNDR member, and founder of SEEDS India, Manu Gupta will be speaking at this thematic session which will unpack the barriers that precent data from becoming decision intelligence. Read more. 

 

Equity in Action: Early Warnings for All People

5 June 10:00 – 11:30

Along with the Risk-Informed Early Action Partnership (REAP), GNDR will be at this side event, which will bring together Early Warning Systems stakeholder to understand the diverse needs, priorities and barriers to accessing early warning systems. Read more.

 

Inclusive and multisectoral approach to effective preparedness

6 June – 09:00 – 10:30

GNDR member, Gloria Kunyenga, of the Malawi Red Cross, will be speaking at this thematic session which will highlight progress made in global disaster preparedness efforts, including anticipatory actions and multi-hazard approaches, while addressing challenges such as inadequate investment and the exclusion of vulnerable groups. Delivering early warning to everyone: people-centred and gender-responsive approaches

6 June – 10:00 – 11:30

GNDR member, Chandrika Kularathna, will be speaking at this learning lab session, offering hands-on training and simulation on how to implement people-centred early warning – translating early warning to life-saving actions. Read more

 

A world in crisis: Building resilience in complex settings

6 June – 11:00 – 12:30

Co-organised by GNDR, this session will explore the humanitarian – development – peace nexus and work to reaffirm DRR’s key role in advancing sustainable development in conflict-affected states and call for making risk-informed development the norm. Read more.

 

Advancing DRR localisation through South-South and triangular cooperation, peer-to-peer exchange, and international partnership

6 June 14:30 – 16:00

Co-organised by GNDR, this session will explore how international cooperation can be strengthened to accelerate localised DRR actions. It will highlight innovative and scalable DRR initiatives, particularly non-traditional mechanisms such as South-South and triangular cooperation, with an emphasis on peer-to-peer learning, city-to-city partnerships and the engagement of at-risk communities.
