Rwandan CSO secures funding for grassroots resilience after project design training

Knowledge sharing and training opportunities support Rwandan DRR organisation to secure funds and become a National Coordinating Organisation for Views from the Frontline project.

Being a member of GNDR has helped me and my organisation in Rwanda tremendously in practical terms. In May 2018 I was invited to the Global Summit in Malaysia where I could interact and exchange with experts and people with different experiences from every part of the world. I learnt from them all, but in particular from the GNDR staff who gave a session on project design and proposal writing.

Later, joining the Regional Advisory Group (RAG) in Eastern Africa has allowed us to shape the development of GNDR in our region in areas such as fundraising, events, projects, learning and member recruitment.

Other doors have opened to my organisation as a result of being a member. In August 2018 we were selected as the National Coordinating Organisation in Rwanda to conduct Views from the Frontline, which gave us further opportunities to receive training.

Now we’re putting all the learning and capacity we’ve gained by being a member of GNDR into good use. We have formed a very strong platform with all regional and Rwandan national members to tackle DRR issues. We have engaged with local partner organisations to implement Views from the Frontline and we’ve used our new capacity to equip our partner organisations with the knowledge required to strengthen them.

We used the learning about designing and writing project proposals to successfully apply for funding and now work with grassroots communities to execute local action plans. We came to understand the policy adoption and behavioural changes in some aspects to build resilience with communities. Along with other GNDR members, we have joined efforts with government institutions and established networks to form partnerships to better contribute to resilience, and conduct joint operations that meet the needs of marginalised groups.
