Raging fire burned several parts of Mt. Kenya National Park destroying thousands of acres of grassland.-The fire consumed Upper Burguret and some parts of Gathiuru forest, Narumoro river valley and along Nairobi riverine South Moorland at Sirmon area which is estimated 10,000 feet above the sea level.

Efforts by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Service and the local community to put out the fire were fruitless as the inferno continued to raze several parts of the forest.

Speaking to press, Mt. Kenya National Deputy Warden Simon Gitau said they were forced to mobilize more resources in order to contain the fire that is fast spreading due to strong winds blowing over the area.

The fire started early this week and was blamed on honey harvesters and poachers who sneak into the forest.

Mt. Kenya forest being one of the major water towers in the country and the second highest mountain in Africa, thousands of indigenous trees which are over 100 years are being reduced to ashes.

Mt Kenya is also famous for hiking, with KWS statistics indicating that about 30,000 tourists hike the mountain every year.
